BlagoDIM EU is a nonprofit civic organization in Belgium that supports mothers with children who were forced to flee abroad because of the war.
We help them recover, adapt to a new life, find inner stability, and receive the humanitarian support they need.
How it all began
In 2022, after the beginning of the full-scale war, Mariel Slavska, founder of the NGO BlagoDIM in Ukraine, who had already been working for five years with women and families in difficult life circumstances, was forced to relocate to Belgium. Once there, she began building a support network for Ukrainians who had also fled the war.
One of the first steps was the organisation, together with Martine Lambrecht and Huis Tabor in Tielt, of basic Dutch language courses for Ukrainians in the summer of 2022. This gave mothers and children the opportunity to prepare for the new school year and take their first steps toward integration.
The format supported both mothers and children at the same time: while the mothers were studying, the children stayed with a Ukrainian teacher, and later the women could talk with one another, share experiences, and help each other navigate life in a new country. At that time, this was especially important, as there was not yet a clear support system in Belgium for Ukrainians.
It was from these first steps — language, support, humanitarian aid, and community — that the work of BlagoDIM EU in Belgium began to take shape. This initiative was even featured in a separate journalistic article.
Later, a collection, sorting, and dispatch point for humanitarian aid to Ukraine was organized at Huis Tabor in Tielt. Together with volunteers, we received essential items — clothing, kitchenware, candles, long-lasting food products, and other useful household goods — sorted them, and prepared them for shipment. Huis Tabor supported us not only by providing the premises, but also by helping raise funds for transportation. In total, 17,076 kg of humanitarian aid was sent from there, reaching more than 3,000 people in Ukraine.
HUMANITARIAN VAN AS A RESULT OF TRUST AND PARTNERSHIP
How Belgian partners helped us strengthen our humanitarian mission
Later, we realised that in order to deliver aid effectively in Ukraine, we critically needed a small van that could transport humanitarian cargo to frontline areas. With the support of the Diocese of Bruges, in 2023 we were able to raise 10,000 euros and purchase this vehicle. Since then, the van has been operating in Ukraine every day: delivering humanitarian aid to people in frontline zones, including in the direction of the Kherson region, and for several years now it has been an important part of our work.

Visit of Belgian Bishop Lode Aerts to BlagoDIM in Irpin
The support of our Belgian partners was not only financial, but also deeply personal. On February 22, 2023, BlagoDIM in Irpin was visited by bishops of the Belgian Catholic Church, including Bishop Lode Aerts. They came in person to see with their own eyes how our organization works in Ukraine, how humanitarian aid is distributed, and what real support Ukrainian families are receiving.
This visit became an important sign of trust for us and a confirmation that international partners are not only helping from a distance, but are also deeply engaged in understanding the real needs of people on the ground.
Our partnerships in Belgium are not just words of support, but joint projects with tangible results.
In cooperation with vzw “WASKO” and its founder Jan De Potter, we held a charity concert in Belgium in support of BlagoDIM. Guests enjoyed classical music, while Ukrainians evacuated to Belgium shared their personal stories from the stage.
During the event, 529 euros were raised, which we used to purchase kitchen utensils — pots and pans. These items were later delivered to families in Ukraine through BlagoDIM as practical household support for people living through the consequences of war.
DELIVERY OF NEW FOOTWEAR FROM BELGIUM FOR FAMILIES IN UKRAINE
In cooperation with Jan De Potter and WASKO vzw, we organised the delivery of new footwear from a manufacturer for families in Ukraine.
Jan De Potter coordinated this process in Belgium, while the BlagoDIM team ensured the further delivery of this aid to Ukraine. Thanks to this cooperation, families affected by the war received high-quality new footwear as real and much-needed support in everyday life.
This project became another example of how, through trust, partnership, and well-organised cooperation between Belgium and Ukraine, humanitarian support can reach people in a concrete and practical form.
Thanks to the support of Huis Tabor and the charity lunches organised by Martine Lambrecht, we were able to launch the “She Can” project twice.
Within these two cohorts, around 221 women received psychological support, help in rebuilding their inner stability, and practical tools for their next life steps. This initiative became possible thanks to the raised funding of approximately 4,536 euros.

Quote from the recommendation letter
“We would also like to emphasize that Ms. Mariel Slavska, as director, has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities: determination, a people-oriented approach, and a high level of professionalism. “Huis Tabor” wholeheartedly recommends the nonprofit organization BlagoDIM and its director.”
OUR TEAM
Our team is our pride. Every team member is dedicated to delivering the best results.
The project was implemented with the support of the Diocese of Bruges (Bisdom Brugge), in particular with the support of Bishop Lode Aerts (Belgium).
This was a long-term online support program for women, combining psychological help, coaching support, and practical knowledge for financial recovery.
A special focus of the program was women’s financial empowerment: we helped participants look for new opportunities, apply for grants, and take their first steps toward starting their own business.
The Diocese of Bruges has also published an article about our collaboration and support for the project.

RESULTS
As a result of the project, 74% of women said they felt more inner stability, emotional recovery, and clarity about their next life steps. Participants learned to better understand their condition, overcome exhaustion, reduce anxiety, recognize their own resources, and move from confusion to action.
Here are two specific examples of results.
Mariika, a mother of many children and the wife of a serviceman, received two grants — UAH 200,000 and UAH 500,000 — to develop her own business after participating in the program. Today, she is creating HobbyLavka, a space of creativity and support for women, children, and veterans.
Dasha, who joined the project in a state of confusion caused by the war, restored her inner resources in two months, found her path in creativity, and together with her mother created the brand “Ya Dar.”
Participants also received power banks, especially important in wartime and during power outages, as well as printed coaching workbooks, which helped them go deeper into the program and закрепити results.
We are sincerely grateful for this trust and support. Thanks to it, women received not only help, but also a real chance to move from inner support to action.
